zebra / black & white horse is a conceptual interpretation of the song “Zebra” by Beach House, printed on semi-transparent vellum. Can be read front-to-back or back-to-front.

In the song “zebra” by @beaccchhoussse, a black and white horse intrudes upon a herd of wild zebras: an extended metaphor that characterizes the self-centered person to whom the lyrics are addressed.

What evolutionary purposes do zebra stripes serve? The 2010 wordpress blogger “kitnicholls” suggests that there is no scientific consensus; they may help form group identity and entice a mate, or perhaps they exist for camouflage and to repel biting flies. In other words, do they ATTRACT or DECEIVE?

This zine can be read two ways: front to back or back to front.
Its form plays into the song’s emotional ambiguity by positioning related images opposite one another on each spread. The edition shown above is printed on semi-transparent vellum, which both blurs and reveals the preceding/succeeding pages, echoing the song’s refrain: “Don’t I know you better than the rest? / All deception, all deception from you”
